TRAUMA
Acute Trauma (Trauma Aguda)
Acute trauma results from a single distressing or overwhelming event. Examples may include an accident, natural disaster, assault, sudden loss of a loved one, or another life-threatening experience. Individuals may experience shock, anxiety, fear, confusion, or emotional distress following the event.
Chronic Trauma (Trauma Crônica)
Chronic trauma develops from repeated or prolonged exposure to highly stressful or traumatic situations over time. Examples can include ongoing abuse, domestic violence, bullying, neglect, or living in an unsafe environment. Long-term exposure to trauma can affect emotional well-being, relationships, self-esteem, and overall mental health.
Vicarious Trauma (Trauma Vicário)
Vicarious trauma occurs when a person is indirectly affected by exposure to another individual’s traumatic experiences. It is common among healthcare professionals, therapists, caregivers, first responders, and others who regularly support people who have experienced trauma. Over time, hearing or witnessing traumatic stories can impact a person’s emotional health, worldview, and sense of safety.
